Progress of War
In the South-West we have the intelligence:
BEFORE CORNINTH, May 17th.- Latest advices form Gen. Curtis are, that his formce are between Scorcy and Little Rock, Ark., and are rapidly marching on the Capital. Gov. rector called out the militia, and the people generally, to come out, and large numbers applied to Gen. Curtis for protection. They desire to come under the old flag.
Lieut. Geo. Sherman writes:- I have given up all hopes of hearing from you again by mail. I have got no letters and expect none.
Capt. Baldwin is here. he arrived four days ago, ;looking fine, and has stood the trip so far very well. The letters sent by him have not yet arrived, being behind in a commissary train. We are bound for Memphis, I think; they have marched us all over the State of Missouri, and I don't care where I go.
An order has come to burn tents, and to get ready for a facrced march of 25 miles a day. From her e we go to Point Jackson, and from there to Memphis, I guess.
the boys with us are well, but of the ficve sent to Springfield, Kimball has died. He has a mother oand sister somewhere near Elgin, but they will probably hear of his death before you receive this.
We march in one hour for Dixie. We all hope to keep Capt. with us."
It is trying to have our friends thus shut off from all communication wityh us. We hope the gunboats and mortars will hurry and open the Mississsippi. Col. Joslyn and ofther officers absent from the army of the South West, are unable to join their Regiments until communication is opened in some direction.
More written but little to do with the 36th Infantry.
